Understanding Your FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) Number
The FIRE movement is built on a simple premise: save aggressively, invest wisely, and reach a point where your investments generate enough income to cover your living expenses for the rest of your life. This free FIRE Timeline Planner helps you calculate exactly how much money you need to save and how many years it will take to get there.
The 4% Rule and Your FIRE Number
Your "FIRE Number" is the total portfolio value required to sustain your lifestyle. It is traditionally calculated using the 4% Rule (also known as the Safe Withdrawal Rate). The rule states that if you withdraw 4% of your portfolio in your first year of retirement, and adjust that amount for inflation each subsequent year, your money is highly likely to last 30+ years.
Formula: Annual Expenses × 25 = Your FIRE Number (Assuming a 4% Withdrawal Rate)
If you want to be more conservative (e.g., planning for a 50-year retirement or assuming lower market returns), you might choose a 3% or 3.5% withdrawal rate, which requires multiplying your expenses by 33.3 or 28.5, respectively.
The Most Important Metric: Your Savings Rate
When it comes to retiring early, your investment return matters, but your Savings Rate is the true accelerator.
- A 10% savings rate means it will take roughly 51 years to retire.
- A 30% savings rate cuts that time to 28 years.
- A 50% savings rate drops it to just 17 years.
- A 70% savings rate means you can retire in under 9 years!
